The brief for this dining table was to create a statement piece that our client could use as the focal point of their dining room. This table is all about the timber and letting it speak for itself. The whole table is made from a pair of Elm slabs sourced sequentially from a single tree.

The table top is the main attraction and it is formed of a pair of book-matched slabs. The book-match forms a near symmetry between the two halves of the table. We opted to retain elements of the waney edge down the centre of the table which are infilled with pockets of smoked resin.

Our client expressed a desire that the table should be elegant in its form without causing any restriction to leg room underneath the table. Enabling them to comfortably seat 10 without unfortunate guests having to straddle table legs.

The four table legs are curved, sculptural pieces and are pushed right to the corners of the table to maximise leg room. The legs connect to curved aprons at each end. These are formed by laminating several thin layers of Elm for a strong curved element.

The curved aprons tie into a pair of stretchers that run the length of the table via double wedged through-tenons at each end. The through tenons add detail and interest whilst also stiffening up the whole table. The combination of the curved aprons and the inboard stretchers mean that there is maximum thigh clearance for those sat around the table, whilst at the same time keeping the table edge visually very light.
